Dr. Alfred K. Njamnshi participates at UNESCO’s Recommendation on the Ethics of Neurotechnology Meeting

Representing Cameroon, Dr. Alfred K. Njamnshi (IBI Neurodiplomacy Working Group Lead) participated at UNESCO's Intergovernmental Meeting on the draft Recommendation on the Ethics of Neurotechnology held on May 12 - 16, 2025 at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France.

At the 42nd session of the UNESCO General Conference in November 2023, Member States unanimously decided to prepare an international standard-setting instrument on the ethics of neurotechnology, in the form of a recommendation.

Further to this decision, UNESCO led a multidisciplinary effort, attended by Drs. Judy Illes (Representative from Canada), Olivia Matshabane (Representative from South Africa) and Marcello Ienca (Representative from Switzerland and Germany) as part of the Ad Hoc Expert Group, to produce a preliminary report and a first draft of the Recommendation, which were shared with Member States in September 2024 for their comments and observations.

The May intergovernmental meeting that included Member States' contributions, led to a revision of the Recommendation, which will be put forward for adoption at the 43rd session of the General Conference in November 2025.

When adopted, the Recommendation will be one of the first global normative instruments in this critically important field.
